Alaska Weddings – Olivia + Neil

In December I had the opportunity to create wedding flowers at Our Lady of The Snows Chapel in Girdwood. I’ve seen many photos of this quaint cabin in the woods but there was something special about being there in person for the first time.

Olivia and Neil were looking for a wintery floral decor without too much of a Christmas look so I used flowers in deep magenta and scarlet.

A huge thanks to Grace Adams Photography for her breathtaking photos. She’s one of my favorite wedding photographers and I was thrilled to finally be able to work with her.

A perfect winter wedding to be sure.

The bride’s bouquet was brimming with the most exquisite white waxflower. She had wanted anemones in her bouquet but they unfortunately weren’t available. I was so happy Olivia was open to my using burgundy gerber daisies instead. Their dark centers gave the look of anemones and are much more durable a flower.

The dark bridesmaids’ dresses made all the bouquets pop!

It was hard for me not to wear around the flower girl’s crown, which was chock full of baby’s breath, waxflower and spray roses.

Red hypericum berries gave the boutonnieres a little bit of punch.

The altar centerpiece was one of my pride and joys. Trailing amaranthus was spilling over the sides and with the eucalyptus, stock and waxflower filled in between the roses it smelled so good!

I had so much fun designing the centerpieces and got some wonderful assistance from my friend Rachel of Alaska Blooms Peony Farm.

But what I really enjoyed working on was the garland for the sweetheart table.

Alaska Weddings – Caitlin + Jason

I don’t have the opportunity to do winter wedding flowers too often. Alaskans make the most of their summer and usually get married from June-August. When bride Caitlin hired me for her January wedding I was thrilled. She wanted all white and greenery.

Caitlin and Jason lucked out – the morning of their wedding it was like a magical snowy fairy land. Anchorage has been severely lacking in snow for the past four winters and this year hasn’t disappointed. We got about 18 inches on their wedding day.

Thanks to Erica Rose Photography for capturing my florals so perfectly!

Caitlin wanted simplicity so I went with white stock, roses, carnations and waxflower mixed with eucalyptus.

Caitlin had me wrap her bouquet in blush silk ribbon. I was overjoyed to finally have the opportunity to use this. It was a dream to wrap and tie! She had me add a little “something blue” at the last minute.

It was the perfect combination when it came to outside shots. Look at that snow globe of a world Caitlin got!

Alaska Weddings: a winter reception

In Alaska, winter solstice is kind of a big deal. It’s the shortest day of the year. In Anchorage we had a little under five and a half hours. It becomes part of the daily winter grind. The sun doesn’t rise until well after you arrive at work and it’s already set when you drive home for the day.

After December 21 we will gradually gain more daylight. It’s a celebratory time for Alaskans.

Recently a friend of mine got married and decided to have her reception around solstice time. When I was hired to make some centerpieces for her I was thrilled to create more wintery pieces.

Purple and lavender carnations, white chrysanthemums, eucalyptus and spruce sprigs were all I needed to bring some winter cheer to her reception.

The couple loves Italy so it was fitting that many of the bud vases were little limoncello glasses.

Alaska Weddings: Amy + Joe

Last-minute weddings are sometimes the best. When my high school friend Amy called me last week to ask if I’d make her bridal bouquet for her wedding this week, I couldn’t say no.

Amy asked for plum and white colors. Alaska Wholesale Flower Market had the most precious Moody Blues roses and deep purple mini carnations. Amy was sold.

I love presenting the corsages and bouts in a pretty way. My first step is to use grocery store doughnut boxes. They have the clear window on the top so you can peek inside and they are big enough to hold several boutonnieres at once. I happened to have some purple tissue paper that was perfect for this occasion.

I had a few leftovers so I made myself a little flower crown. I was able to stop by the reception in the evening and ran into all my old friends. It was a fun reunion. And, of course, I had Ivan model my crown.

Alaska Weddings: Alyeska promo photo shoot

Anchorage may be the biggest city in Alaska, but nearly every day I think of it as a small town. Kevin Bacon has nothing on Anchorage — we’re all about two degrees separated.

I recently reconnected with high school mate Peter Luchsinger of Pal Photography. When I told him I was a florist on the side he asked if I would contribute two bridal bouquets to a promotional photo shoot at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood.

Without a bride providing me style guidance I was giddy with the prospect of having complete creative control. This proved to be a challenge as I had so many ideas — I have to hand it to brides. I forgot how tough it is to make a design decision!

I ended up with  a soft palette of cream, pink, white, peach, sage green and deep burgundy.

Alaska Weddings: Audra + Chris

Last month I got to create wedding flowers in Arctic Valley. Today I was at the top of Alyeska. What a fun experience! My assistant and I got to cram all the flowers into the tram and ride to the top of the mountain. Audra and Chris are tying the knot at Seven Glaciers Restaurant, a dining experience with unparalleled views of Alaska.

The bride selected white hydrangeas, ivory garden roses, white tulips, football mums and blush vadella roses. What a perfect palette for a mountain top soirée — especially since it started snowing as we were setting up!
